Kain's Belt Filling Machine

During the first world war an urgent call went out from GHQ France for a better method of refilling the Vickers machine gun belts.  The following extract from a tactical summary gave the principle reasons:

“Tactical Summary of Machine Gun Operations 1916 – 1917”

“The failure of machine guns to be able to deliver effective barrage fire in certain operations has invariably been due (traced) to the difficulties in re-loading wet belts by hand (the employment of the existing type of belt loading machine being altogether out of the question)”
